Zaofitness would like for everybody to know about the hard work this “72-year young” great grandmother has been putting in over the past few months. Today is her 72nd birthday and yet she was still up early today to train, which is why she looks and feels like she does.

Let me introduce to you – June Maher. Mother of 8, grandmother of 32, and great-grandmother of 6. She is my mum – and an inspiration to her whole family.

I always knew mum was strong as I had seen her train for many years, but 12 months ago, mum asked if would I train her – I jumped at the chance and neither of us have looked back. 3 mornings a week, I take mum through a tough 1-hr Personal Training session – consisting of weights, boxing, circuits, rower and running. Every session she turns up ready to go, enthusiastic and a big smile on her face wanting to work hard. Never has an excuse, and always pushing herself to be better.

Over the past few months I have seen a change in June, and she set herself a goal of 9kg weight loss by her birthday. It was a big goal, but she has gone about this systematically with a real sense of purpose. Every week she has really watched what she has eaten – cutting out junk (but still allowed herself the occasional treat), and she has walked every weekday – rain, hail or shine. When the weather allows, mum will walk 4-6km outside, and when it is wet, she walks at home. Each week she has seen a loss on the scales while still improving her strength and fitness.

Today mum weighed in and has achieved her goal. It has been an amazing effort and I am so proud of what she achieves in every session, and indeed over the past 12 months. Mum continues to show me and my family the value of hard work, setting a goal and sticking to a plan for success.

A big happy birthday to this very strong and fit woman, and congratulations on reaching another goal. You continue to amaze me with your strength, determination and improving fitness. I think today you deserve a Bailey’s and Cold Rock!!
